What a vibrant and alive city. So many people on
the streets with a look of purpose on their faces and self-assured gaits, an endless array of outdoor cafés and entertainers,
food stalls, and an eclectic mix of 19th Century
architecture with modern buildings. We explored this bustling city by foot and also by bicycle. Highlights included the Cricket
Stadium (Jim had wanted to take in a game yet alas the season had just ended), the Botanical Gardens (magnificent),
the famed Victorian Market where it seems everything is for sale with people yelling like auctioneers competing to
be heard over one another, along with hordes of people buying the produce, merchandise, etc. Bike riding is encouraged here. There
are self-service bike stalls all over the city allowing one to ride through the city (though one must carefully dodge all
of the “driven looking locals” and the many tourists plus other bicyclers who all ride on the “opposite
side” than we do in the States). If you return the bike to any location within 30 minutes and wait 5 minutes before
taking another one, you can virtually ride all day and only pay $2.80 for the bike! We rode through the city, along the beach,
around lakes, gardens, and along the river! (as we rode for 1-2 hours almost every day while here) A final highlight was an evening
at the Athenium, a magnificent grand dame theater building, to attend a tribute concert/theater performance to Marvin Gaye.
A funk band accompanied an actor who narrated the story of Marvin’s life, and also sounded so much like him –
it was uncanny (and a bit eerie too). Very fun time dancing in our seats (and eventually on our feet when
the crowd warmed up).
