We adventured
on Kangaroo Island with a small tour group led by our guide, J.R. with Kangaroo Island Adventure Tours. Our tour guide kept
us entertained with his “stories” (he had one for every occasion), jokes, and bits of island wisdom. We visited
a Eucalyptus Distillery (only one of its kind in the world) and saw a sheep shearing show where we learned what an art this
is. One wrong move and it could be a bloody mess for the shearer and/or the sheep. Along our journey we saw sweeping views
of the coastline in its azure colors, bright white sandy beaches, and a lot of farmland. Alas, we rarely saw a kangaroo, except
for road kill which is quite common, as they are nocturnal critters. We stayed overnight at a rustic resort with 500 acres
and rode a mountain bike there through the sand and jungle – and did see a few kangaroo here, along with koalas low
down in the Eucalyptus trees. We actually found a rebel koala hanging out on a pine tree. Most koalas sleep about 20 hours
a day essentially because the Eucalyptus leaves they consume for 4 hours straight make them “stoned.” The leaves
are toxic yet the koalas have a sturdy digestive system so they can consume them. We visited Remarkable Rocks, from the Ice
Ages, and also met some Australian Fur Sea Lions which are rare. One of our favorite adventures brought out the playful child
in each of us. We went sledding down a huge sand dune and in spite of us being the “elders” in the group (even
older than the guide), we still wanted to climb the sand mountain for more when the others had called it quits.
